People often say there is no beauty in the “process” that leads you to your solution. Here at Changenuity, we disagree. For the past few months, we have been prioritizing the reshaping of our “process” by enforcing a specific company culture.
As we delve deeper into the business world, we have come across many wise corporate veterans that continually speak about the importance of having a great company culture. Company culture is defined as the behaviour of employees within a company and the meaning that employees attach to those behaviours. This culture comes from the company vision, values, norms, systems, symbols, language, assumptions, beliefs, and habits. A Columbia University study shows that a companies with high company culture will have an employee turnover rate of 13.9%, whereas those with low company culture have a turnover rate of 48.4%. This is usually because employees feel unhappy in environments where they are not appreciated or allowed to contribute new ideas. A study in the Journal of Organizational Behaviour suggests that culture causes performance, and the right culture can result in increased profits. As cofounders, we have been informally developing our company culture from the moment we started collaborating. However, when we recently brought two backend developers onto our team, we decided to put our company’s culture into words. A team member of Changenuity will: a) Represent truly and faithfully: ii) The goal of the company: Improve global living standards and guide society towards a sustainable future. b) Engage themselves and their skills and knowledge fully in order to achieve the company’s goals c) Promote the company’s values in themselves and in their interactions. The values are: i) Growth ii) Compassion iii) Responsibility iv) Creativity and Ingenuity v) Collaboration Along with these tenets mentioned above, we stress the importance of voicing our ideas, feedback, and struggles. We want Changenuity to be an enterprise of impact, and as our company name suggests, change. We believe the best way to do this is to ensure that all team members are given a voice; by harnessing the diversity of our team, we are more likely to generate unique solutions. We are really excited about our new team members, and we are enthusiastic about the new ways in which this company can grow with more support on our side. https://www.tesla.com/en_CA/blog/master-plan-part-deux We would be remiss if we did not introduce our vision. And even more remiss if we didn’t do it brazen-Elon-Musk style. Simply put, we want to change the world for the better. With increasing insecurity of energy, food, and water, in addition to the intensifying effects of global warming, our global community is evidently not in the best shape. We don’t believe one company alone can make a very large difference. That’s why we’re building a collaborative platform to connect impact-driven individuals and groups with impact-creating opportunities. If we work together, we can achieve much more. We may be overly idealistic for having these goals, but we fully intend to achieve them. 1)Create a community of collaborators that make a positive impact around the world. Globalization is often viewed in a negative light: problems are exported to other countries around the world. 2) Build inexpensive & resilient renewable energy infrastructure for areas lacking electricity. 3 billion people around the world still live without stable electricity. This slows down economic growth and is an indirect cause of global poverty 3) Design and install water purifiers in areas that have been electrified. 4) Develop efficient and sustainable agricultural practices in the areas that have been electrified. 5) Develop inexpensive electrical household devices (ex. stoves) . Although we technically have many steps after this, we’ll stick to these four for now -- they will be difficult enough to accomplish! Our ultimate vision is a sustainable future for humanity -- that means we follow the triple bottom line: people, profit, planet. These will be our guiding principles as we proceed with our work. Naturally, the path to our goals is by no means simple. We will try, fail, and try again until we succeed. We hope you can join us in making a sustainable future a reality. A la prochaîne. “Rather, ten times, die in the surf, heralding the way to a new world, than stand idly on the shore.”
-Florence Nightingale As Changenuity’s cofounders, Arthur and Divya, we forbid ourselves from standing idle, and we hope to encourage many others to do the same with our platform. We are engineering students from the University of British Columbia who hope to facilitate collaboration between people to advance their knowledge and skills while also contributing to society in a positive way. The idea for this platform bloomed from our own observations of the struggle to find teams or projects to contribute to. In high school, even though we had been interested in topics like programming, renewable energy, and space exploration, due to the lack of opportunity for young students to actually make a social impact in those fields, we both focussed our energies into leadership projects. We have worked on projects such as spearheading a Model UN conference and coordinated events to promote the retention of ethnic cultures in the community. Though we are extremely grateful for the skills we obtained from these ventures, as university rolled around, we realized that we wanted to move towards something greater. Entrepreneurship presented itself to us as one of the best ways to pave way to the social change we craved to see in the world. As we brainstormed ideas in a humble little google document all through first year university, we finally decided that an online platform for change would be our first entrepreneurial undertaking. We wanted to provide others around us to work on a tangible project instead of letting their precious talents and skills collect dust. Nightingale so eloquently states that humans should surf boldy in the ocean rather than staying within the comforts of cool soothing sand. Changenuity seeks to get as many people off shore as possible, and wishes to see a better world as a result. |
